MICROCHIPPING

On 6 February 2013 the government announced it will be introducing legislation to make microchipping of all dogs compulsory in England from 6 April 2016.

From that date owners will need to:

  • Have their dog microchipped and registered on one of the authorised commercial databases available

  • Register the details of any new owner before they sell or give the dog away

  • Keep their contact details up-to-date on the microchip databases

The benefits of microchipping include,

  • Deterrent for dog theft

  • Helps unite lost dogs with their owners

  • Helps tackle puppy farming

  • Encourages responsible ownership.

The microchip itself is not much bigger than a grain of rice, In the UK the microchip is implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. Microchipping just feels like a small pinch or mild sting. The dog does not feel the chip at all after it has been inserted. The cost of microchipping varies £15-£20 but plcs like The Dogs Trust hold free microchipping events across the uk.
